Summer music festivals, once the best way to discover new bands and enjoy unforgettable vibes, are now facing an existential crisis. Over 40 festivals in the U.S. alone have been canceled this year, while Coachella is struggling to sell out. Inflation, skyrocketing costs, changing musical tastes, and a younger generation less interested in the festival experience have combined to create a perfect storm.
Fans are increasingly choosing safer bets—mega-star stadium tours—over festivals with diverse lineups. Meanwhile, rising costs make smaller festivals unable to compete, so many fold. If music festivals want an encore, they’ll have to give fans something they’ll cheer for—or risk being forgotten.
