New York Edges Closer to Legalizing Assisted Suicide

New York lawmakers passed a bill allowing terminally ill patients to end their lives on their terms, joining 11 other states. MAID (Medical Aid in Dying Act) allows people with six months or less to live—verified by two doctors—to request lethal medication.

Supporters, like state senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal, say it’s all about shortening painful deaths, not hastening them. But opponents —including religious groups and some lawmakers— say the measure is morally troubling. Kathy Hochul hasn’t said whether she’ll sign it into law, leaving New York at a crossroads.
